Chapter 15

Base: The core around which a free fall formation of skydivers is built.

They didn’t talk on the way back to the Merry Cherub.

There was a distance between them, strange and heavy, and Aria was afraid to ask him what was wrong. Something had shifted during that art class, but she had no idea what it was or how she felt about it.

In her purse, she carried the drawing he’d done of his hand. His talent was remarkable, but so much more than that was his stunned disbelief that he’d drawn so well.

She’d jokingly asked what had happened, and he’d said without meeting her gaze, “Something came over me.”

And then he took her hand, and they walked the rest of the way in silence. But his touch lit a happy little fire deep in the pit of her belly. A fire she was too scared to warm herself by.

Once they were at the B and B and it was time to climb the stairs together and head to their bedrooms, he’d mumbled about forgetting something back at the tavern and bolted.

Leaving Aria on the porch feeling both confused and relieved.

She did not wait for his return and went to her room. She texted her family and friends good-night, got ready for bed, and fell asleep without hearing Remington ever come in.

Aria spent the night in dreams of him and woke the next morning, Friday, December 18, feeling hot and edgy, the covers twisted around her legs.

She stared up at the angel mural painted on the ceiling, trying to make sense of her feelings for Remington and getting absolutely nowhere. She liked the man. More than she’d ever expected to, and when she kissed him, no matter how much she wished it wasn’t so, she heard that infernal humming.

What did it mean?

Forget it. Move on. No time for that nonsense. She had work to do.

The wedding was tomorrow, and she needed to double-check on everything in person—cake, florist, caterers, DJ, photographer. The rehearsal at four, followed by the rehearsal dinner. It’d be a jam-packed day.

A knock sounded on the hallway door.

Remington?

She leaped out of bed but then realized, nah, he’d just use the connecting door. Grabbing her bathrobe, she put it on and tied the belt as she walked to the door. Going up on tiptoes, she peered through the peephole.

Jenny Cantrell stood holding a room service tray.

Aria opened the door. “I didn’t order room service.”

“Remington ordered it for you.”

Aria peered around Jenny. “Where is he?”

“He went out jogging at dawn and asked me to bring you blueberry pancakes and veggie sausages at seven-thirty.”

Oh, that sly devil.

“Thank you.” Aria took the tray Jenny offered.

“Don’t thank me, thank Remington. It was his idea to add the carnation by the way.” Jenny nodded at the little red flower in a small bud vase. “He saw the arrangement on the front desk as he was leaving and commented how you appreciate beautiful things.”

Aww. Aria wished he was here right now so she could give him a big hug.
